2017 Berthoud Local Lecture Series

Gardening 101   – LeeAnne Sanders and Mike Costanzo

LeeAnne and Mike run Lake Hollow Homestead, a micro-farm just west of Berthoud that specializes in fresh produce grown organically. They will be giving an introductory level class on starting your own home garden, even if you’ve never before picked up a shovel or planted a tomato. This class will cover all the basic topics required to begin your first garden. How do I build a garden bed? When do I plant? What do I plant? How do I harvest? What about pests? Join us to see how you can make your garden grow!

Making a Backyard Orchard Through Grafting – Joel Reich

Joel Reich, a local expert horticulturist will cover all things grafting in this two part series. Friday night’s lecture will cover the basics of grafting. What is it? Why use it? How does it work? Sunday’s hands-on workshop will allow participants to graft their very own apple trees to take home with them. In order to participate in the Sunday grafting workshop, attendance at the Friday informational session is required. Limited attendance is available.

Raising Backyard Chickens  – Kristen Ramey

Have you considered raising chickens, but hesitated due to questions? Come learn the ins and outs of raising your own laying hens in your very own backyard. Kristin Ramey, who runs Long Shadow Farm, a poultry CSA just west of Berthoud, will teach an introductory level class on all things backyard chickens.

 How to Butcher Chickens

In the modern age of factory farms and mass-produced meat, raising and butchering your own meat birds is a rare skill to possess. Join Kristin Ramey of Long Shadow Farm to learn about the difference between factory poultry and home grown and learn the art of butchering your own meat birds. This will be a hands-on workshop entailing the actual butchering of live birds. Attendees will have the option of watching or participating, as well as the option of taking home up to two freshly butchered birds for home consumption.
